Computers are not Magical Boxes

Computers are not magical boxes that always produce the correct answer, but unfortunately, a lot of people seem to think that they are. Computers are not the only factor in this hollowing out, but they play an important role. Computers are great number crunchers, but they're lousy random number generators. Computers are essential but remain a mystery to many and the slightest problem can seem a disaster. Computers are redefining how we interact with others and gain knowledge about the world around us, and they are increasingly important in our daily lives.

Computers are better able to oversee their use by individual pupils than is a teacher.Medical Research News Published: Sunday, 24-Feb-2008. Computers are able to diagnose Alzheimer's disease faster and more accurately than experts, according to research published in the journal Brain. Computers are designed to be noisy for the same reason that motorcycles, rock music and heavy-duty machinery are loud: The noise conveys POWER. Computers are like pets or infants to us in some ways. Computers are made up of plastics, metals, and glass all intermixed in small packages.

Computers have been used to coordinate information in multiple locations since the 1950s. Computer operating systems and applications were modified to include the ability to define and access the resources of other computers on the network, such as peripheral devices, stored information, and the like, as extensions of the resources of an individual computer. Computer-related professions Hardware-related Electrical engineering, Electronics engineering, Computer engineering, Telecommunications engineering, Optical engineering, Nanoscale engineering Software-related Computer science, Human-computer interaction, Information technology, Software engineering, Scientific computing, Web design, Desktop publishing. Computer hardware may fail or may itself have a fundamental problem that produces unexpected results in certain situations. Computers then combined this information with police dispatches on accidents or emergencies and deliver it to users who can access it on PDAs, mobile phones and the Internet.

Computer commands can destroy data in a matter of seconds, as can humidity, temperature, physical mutilation, or magnetic fields created, for example, by passing a strong magnet over a disk. Computer-stored records that contain human statements must satisfy an exception to the hearsay rule if they are offered for the truth of the manner asserted. Computers are great number crunchers, but they're lousy random number generators. Computers may be lousy random number generators, but we've still come a long way:. Computers with inputs (like the keyboard, the mouse, the CPU thermometers, etc) are cable of getting random numbers from those inputs.

Computers seem to be everywhere these days. Computer games that show killing and destruction as fun or as an acceptable way to solve problems can be harmful. Computer Users Unaware of Risks, Study Finds Although most users think they're safe, most have taken no precautions. Computer monitors can contain large amounts of toxic materials.

Computers are better able to oversee their use by individual pupils than is a teacher. Blue-collar and clerical workers displaced by computers already have a difficult time adjusting to the requirements of the new high-wage jobs, and, if educational curriculums are not changed to reflect the markets demand for sophisticated thinking and communication, students may graduate without the skills they need either. To the contrary, computerization has increased both the quantity and quality of jobs.

Due to computerization, the labor mix was going to change materially over the next several decades tilted towards a greater concentration of jobs associated with greater complexity in terms of critical thinking and judgment. We all use computers with increasingly powerful hardware that can handle increasingly complex software. I don't think any of us would readily turn the clock back on computerization regarding our specific jobs.
